Birch Trees Kalkaska County, Michigan

Drawing #106 - Based on my photograph of paper birch trees set against autumn colors on a back road in Kalkaska County Michigan. This 8x11 inch drawing was done on black UArt sanded paper mounted on board with Terry Ludwig and Cretacolor soft pastels over a soft pastel alcohol wash underpainting.

November II

Drawing #207, November II was completed in early January 2022. This 26 x 8 inch drawing was done on black Richeson paper mounted on board with Terry Ludwig pastels. The drawing imagines a Michigan forest view in early November before the first snowfall knocks the last of the autumn leaves from the trees.

Selected for The Winter Palette , a national exhibition at the Kavanaugh Gallery, Fine Line Creative Arts Center, St. Charles, IL held in February-March 2022.

Merit Award winner in the 29th Annual Art Exhibit at the Art Barn gallery in Valparasio, IN in 2023.

March Trees 2

March Trees 2, drawing #175 is based on my photograph taken in late winter alongside a back road in Livingston County, Michigan. I was struck by the hazy sunlight streaming thru the faded gray colors of the woods promising the warmth of spring. The drawing measures 26 x 8 inches and was drawn on deep black Colorfix 300 pastel paper mounted on board with Terry Ludwig pastels.

In 2021 “March Trees 2” was juried into the 7th Annual National Pastel Exhibition presented by the Adirondack Pastel Society.

In October 2023, - “March Trees 2” was juried intoIt’s Pastel! 15th Annual National Juried Exhibit, Pastel Society of New Hampshire.

In February 2023 “March Trees 2” was juried into the on-line exhibit Warmth in Winter, by the Alaska Pastel Society.

Also in 2023, “March Trees 2” was selected for the Juried Pastel Exhibit at the Northville Art House in Northville, Michigan.

Danube Forest near Melk, Austria

Drawing #42 - Based on my photograph taken while on a cruise on the Danube River near the city of Melk, Austria.  For this 5 x 10 pastel drawing I used Great American soft pastels on black Richeson sanded pastel paper.

Grandad's Trees

Drawing #248, Grandad’s Trees, is a special drawing to me. It’s based on my photo of a grove of white pine trees that were planted by my grandfather on the family farm in the late 1950s. As a young boy I played in these trees when they looked like a Christmas tree farm. The trees are now 60 feet tall! Located in Geneva Township, Midland County, Michigan. The drawing is 10 x 8 inches and was done on UArt 500 paper with an acrylic ink underpainting with Terry Ludwig, Richeson and pastel pencils.

Autumn Trail at Grand Lake Michigan

Drawing #240, Autumn Trail at Grand Lake MIchigan is 26 x 8 inches and is on black ColorFix 300 pastel paper mounted on conservation board. Based on my photo taken in Presque Isle County. Terry Ludwig, Rembrandt and Girault pastels were used over a pastel alcohol wash underpainting.

Summer Field

Drawing #214 titled Summer Field is based on a photo I took on Dwyer Road near Howell, Michigan. The drawing is 9 x 12 inches and was done on Uart 400 paper mounted on board with Terry Ludwig soft pastels.

In 2023 Summer Field was selected for the Northville Art House Members’ Exhibit.

Cranberry Lake Park

Drawing #177 is based on my photograph taken while on a November hike in Cranberry Lake Park in Oakland Township, Michigan. This 6 x 14 inch pastel drawing was done on gray (storm) Unisom pastel paper. I used Terry Ludwig pastels over a watercolor and acrylic ink underpainting.

Deep in the Woods

Drawing #151, Deep in the Woods is based on a photo I took on a hike alongside the Manistee River near Frederic, Michigan. I came upon these two old farm buildings, one with still a vibrant red paint, settling into the ground. The image is 7 x 5 inches and was drawn on white Pastel Premier sanded paper with Terry Ludwig pastels.

Drawing #243 continues my “deep in the woods” series. Deep in the Woods 7 is 10 x 8 inches. Drawn on UArt 280 pastel paper mounted on black conservation board. I used Terry Ludwig, Diane Townsend, Rembrandt & Girault pastels over an acrylic ink underpainting. Based on my reference from the Grass River Natural Area near Bellair, Michigan in Antrim County.

Cranberry Lake Park 5

Drawing #247, Cranberry Lake Park 5, is the most recent in a series of 5 pastel drawings based on November photos of Cranberry Lake Park in Oakland Township, Michigan. The drawing is 8 x 13.5 inches and was done on UArt 500 paper with Terry Ludwig pastels over an acrylic ink underpainting.

Sturgeon River Woods

Drawing #179 is a late summer view of the Sturgeon River through the surrounding pine woods. Based on my photograph, this 26 x 12 inch pastel drawing was done on a gray Colorfix 1200 board with Terry Ludwig pastels. Indigo acrylic ink was used for some detail work in the drawing.

July Farm

Drawing #221 titled July Farm is based on my photo taken on Bensch Road near M-30 in Gladwin County, Michigan. For this 8 x 26 inch pastel drawing I used Terry Ludwig and CretaColor pastels on ColorFix 300 Sand colored pastel paper mounted on board.

Juried into the Anything Goes exhibit at the Gutman Gallery in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 2023.

Blue Barn

Drawing #228, titled Blue Barn, is based on my photo taken in Cheboygan County, Michigan. To be clear, the actual barn is weather beaten gray. But when sketching the drawing it occurred to me that it should be blue in the drawing. The drawing measures 9 x 12 and was done on UArt 500 paper with Terry Ludwig, Blue Earth and CretaColor pastels.

Drawing #139 is based on a photo taken on a back road near Grand Lake Michigan. This small 6 x 13 inch drawing was juried into the Pastel Society of Maine 19th International Juried Exhibit "Pastels Only" at the Saco Museum and won a Merit Award at the opening reception. The drawing was done on Richeson black sanded paper with Terry Ludwig pastels.

Drawing #158 is based on a photo taken on a back road near Grand Lake Michigan. in June 2020 this 6 x 13 inch drawing was juried into “For Pastels Only on Cape Cod” - a National Exhibition, Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod . In 2021 It was included in the Small Works Exhibit, presented by the Great Lakes Pastel Society. The drawing was done on Richeson black sanded paper with Terry Ludwig pastels.

Drawing #186 continues my Edge of the Woods series. This 6 x 12 inch drawing is based on my photograph taken alongside Hagerman Road near Leonard, Michigan. Exhibited at the Pastel Society of Maine 2021 International Show, Purely Pastel. Drawn on black Richeson paper with Terry Ludwig pastels.

Old Farm

Drawing #155 is based on my photograph taken alongside Route 79 in Lambston County, Ontario. The terrains of southern Ontario and mid Michigan are very similar and the old farms nestled in the land are disappearing. The iconic family farm houses and barns are forms that are deeply embedded in our collective memories; we all seem to have a story of a farm in our family history. This drawing was exhibited in the “Voices of the Midwest” exhibit in Sept-Oct 2020 at The Kavanagh Gallery, Fine Line Creative Arts Center, St. Charles IL. It was also exhibited at the 2021 Pastel Painters of Cape Cod national exhibition. The 4 x 20 inch drawing was done on Richeson black paper with Terry Ludwig pastels.

Autumn Trees

Drawing #170 is based on my photograph taken alongside Hagerman Road near Addison Township, Michigan. I started with a watercolor underpainting using several Art Graf tailor block colors. Terry Ludwig pastels were used exclusively on black Colorfix 300 pastel paper. This drawing was juried into the Pastel Society of America’s 2021 49th annual exhibit, Enduring Brilliance!

Meadowbrook Oak

Drawing #162 titled Meadowbrook Oak, is based on a photo taken of the Meadowbrook campus alongside Adams Road. At the tree line on the edge of an open field stands a magnificent oak that dominates the scene. The drawing is 4 inches by 18 inches and was done on black Richeson paper with Terry Ludwig and Unisom pastels.

Manistee Trail Study

Drawing #153 is based on a photo taken alongside the Manistee River northwest of Frederic, Michigan. Small bare areas of the ground create a sandy soil path running more than a mile from Cameron Bridge Road into the woods. This small 6 x 13 pastel drawing was a study for a larger, subsequent drawing and was done on Richeson black sanded paper with Terry Ludwig pastels.

October Field

Drawing #97 - Based on my photograph taken alongside highway 33 in Ogemaw County, Michigan.  This large 6 x 22 inch pastel drawing was done with Terry Ludwig and Cretacolor pastels on UArt 500 sanded pastel paper.  A pastel alcohol wash and a spray fixative pastel underpaintings were used for the sky and field.

June Morning near Webberville, Michigan

Drawing #90 - Based on my photograph taken on the north side of I-96, near Webberville, Michigan.  This large 8 x 22 inch pastel drawing was done with Terry Ludwig and Cretacolor pastels on sand colored Pastelcard board.  In the fall of 2017, June Morning near Webberville was juried into the Muskegon Museum of Art 89th Annual Michigan Regional Exhibit.

Winter Birch

Drawing #143. Based on a photo taken near Grand Lake, MI, this 8 x 26 pastel drawing was done on deep black Art Spectrum sanded paper with Terry Ludwig Pastels. The photo was taken in October and the drawing was reimagined as a scene deep in winter. The original drawing was sold in December 2019 at the exhibit “Wintry Mix - the Art of Snow and Ice” at the View Gallery in Old Forge, N.Y.

Across the Field

Drawing #100 was the first to be created from my memories of various scenes, not based on a specific photograph.  The image is of two mid-Michigan fallow farm fields adjacent to each other, separated by a screen of planted trees.  This 8 x 22 inch pastel drawing was done on UArt 500 white paper with Terry Ludwig and Cretacolor pastels. This drawing was purchased by a private collector at the 2019 East Lansing Art Fair.

Morning Swim on Wolverine Lake, Michigan

Drawing #122 - This drawing, completed in December 2018, was a gift for my son and daughter-in-law. The 8 x 12 inch drawing is based on a summer morning photograph taken on Wolverine Lake by my daughter-in-law. It was drawn on pearl gray Canson Mi-Teintes paper with Terry Ludwig soft pastels. This drawing is in a private collection in Wolverine Lake Village, Michigan.

Birch Trees Kalkaska County Michigan

Drawing #89 - Based on a photograph of Birch Trees in Kalkaska County, Michigan this 5 1/2 x 11 inch drawing was done entirely with Terry Ludwig pastels.  Alcohol wash and fixative spray pastel underpaintings were used for the background. This drawing is in a private collection in Pahrump, Nevada.

Phragmities in the Snow

Drawing #30 - Snow piled high along the edge of a parking lot provides a backdrop for a patch of phragmities growing in a drainage ditch alongside Orchard Lake Road.  The crest of the snowbank was covered in slush and oily dirt scraped off the parking lot by the snowplow.  This 8 x8 inch drawing was done on white presentation board with a combination of Terry Ludwig, Great American, Royal Langford and Diane Townsend pastels.

Canadian Sunset

Drawing #57 - Based on a photograph taken in mid February alongside Highway 304 near Middlesex Centre, Ontario Canada.  This 6 x 24 inch pastel drawing was done with Terry Ludwig and Great American pastels on Pearl Gray Canson MiTiennes pastel paper.

Birch Trees in Greenland New Hampshire #3

Drawing #65 - Based on a photograph I took while on a walk with my brother near his home in Greenland, NH.  I was fascinated with the randomly curved trunks of these young birch trees. This 8 x 14 pastel drawing was done on white Pastel Premier 400 grit sanded paper with Terry Ludwig and Cretacolor pastels. Third in a series of 5 of original pastel drawings.
